Antoine Parrot considered Antigone the prettier of the two, taller and slimmer. Dejanira had buck teeth like a rabbit. But she was the one he had got to know first and Antigone always received him rather distantly, as her sisterâs friend. There was something rather severe about her, owing to the fact that she was the elder and, after all, the head of the family. Besides, Antoine, a naturally modest man, when faced with two girls, chose the one he thought was not so beautiful. Dejanira was very lively and didnât take herself too seriously. She had large breasts, a well-rounded bottom, and laughed all the time with her rabbit teeth. Antoine was a head taller than her.
Sometimes it turned out that Antoine Parrot arrived at Issy-les-Moulineaux and the Place des Fêtes aware that his friends probably wouldnât be home. But, even when he found the door closed, he did not much mind. In life it is important to go through the motions, even though you may not actually do the thing itself.

At about one oâclock in the morning he leaned over the arm of the chair and gave her a kiss.
âI was wondering if you would dare,â she said. âIâve spent the whole evening trying to guess what time you would make up your mind.â The first hurdle over, he became more adventurous and pretended he had to persuade Suzanne to let him come to bed with her. She seemed to find this completely unexpected and not at all an attractive proposition. Eventually she lent him a pair of floral pyjamas which he found hard to get into, but thought he wouldnât be wearing for very long. She went to put some on as well. Once in bed, in the darkness, he discovered that her feet were like ice, and he offered to warm them up. Without more ado, she placed them on his, and the cold went right through him, momentarily quenching his desire. But you become accustomed to anything, and he started kissing and caressing her again. He unbuttoned her pyjama top and played with her breasts for a long time. But when he slid his
